Definition

A window pane is a single piece of glass within a window frame. Many windows consist of multiple panes separated by dividers called muntins or grilles.

Double-Hung Window

Count: 2 panes (top and bottom sections)

Sliding Glass Windows

Count: 2 panes (sliding section and fixed section)

Picture Window

Count: 5 panes (single piece in the middle plus 2 double-hung windows)

French Pane Window

Count: 12 panes (each individual pane is counted separately if not a decorative overlay)

Counting Window Panes

For our pricing purposes, we count:

Each separate glass pane as one window unit
Double-hung windows (with upper and lower sections that slide) as two window units
Picture windows with a single pane as one window unit
A sliding glass door as two window units
French doors or windows with multiple panes split by wood or plastic pieces on the surface of the window – each pane counts separately

Examples

Example 1: A standard double-hung window with no grid divisions counts as 2 units.
Example 2: A bay window with 3 separate glass sections counts as 3 units.
Example 3: A picture window with 6 decorative grid dividers still counts as only 1 unit (if it’s a single piece of glass with decorative overlay).
Example 4: A sliding glass patio door counts as 2 units.
